Reiki with a deeper focus on compassion

The word Karuna comes from Sanskrit and is commonly translated as compassion or compassionate action. In the context of Reiki, Karuna represents the intention to respond to suffering with compassion, wisdom and loving action.

​

Karuna Reiki builds upon a foundation of Reiki while introducing its own symbols, practices and attunement system.

Rather than replacing Usui Reiki, Karuna Reiki is considered an advanced step for Reiki practitioners who want to continue developing their practice.

How Karuna Reiki® came to be

Karuna Reiki has an interesting history.

​

William Lee Rand was already a Reiki Master when he began studying with Reiki practitioners from different lineages. Through these exchanges, he was introduced to additional Reiki symbols and attunement techniques that were not part of the Usui system he was teaching.

At first, William did not intend to create another Reiki system.

​

He kept the symbols and techniques he encountered and began exploring how they worked. Over time, his students became interested in these additional symbols too.

​

In the winter of 1993, William brought together a group of students to experiment with the symbols. They explored which ones seemed most useful and worked with different attunement methods. William describes praying for guidance throughout this process and asking to be connected with a healing energy that would be of greater benefit.

An important part of his story is often missed: William says he did not channel the symbols himself. The symbols came from other Reiki practitioners. Through working with them, his students and he developed a particular combination of symbols, intentions and attunement practices.

​

By 1995, the system had developed enough for William to give it a name: Karuna Reiki®, meaning Reiki of Compassion.

The system eventually became a two-level practitioner system containing eight primary symbols, with each symbol associated with a different focus within the practice.

What makes Karuna Reiki® different?

One way to understand Karuna Reiki is to think of Reiki symbols as different tools.

You might have one tool for calming, another for grounding, another for working with emotional patterns and another for supporting deep healing.

​

Karuna Reiki gives the practitioner additional tools and techniques to work with.

The focus is not simply on “more powerful Reiki.” It is about having a different set of symbols and practices through which the practitioner directs their intention.

​

Some Karuna Reiki symbols are traditionally associated with qualities such as:

• Compassion

• Grounding

• Peace

• Emotional healing

• Releasing limiting patterns

• Deep healing

• Love and connection

• Support during difficult experiences

 

Karuna Reiki also incorporates chanting or toning of the symbol names as part of some practices. William Rand describes the voice vibration as another way of working with the energy of the symbols.

What are the benefits of Karuna Reiki®?

People seek Karuna Reiki for many different reasons.

​

A session is often described as deeply calming and supportive. Some people experience a greater sense of peace, emotional release, grounding or clarity. Others use Reiki as part of their personal spiritual practice and self-development.

• Emotional balance

• Grounding and feeling more centred

• Working through difficult emotions

Something many people don't know about Karuna Reiki®

Karuna Reiki isn't simply a collection of extra symbols. The intention behind the practice matters.

​

Karuna is about compassionate action. That includes how you treat yourself. For someone who spends much of their life caring for other people, this can be an important shift.

 

Instead of asking: “How can I fix this?”

​

Karuna invites a different question: “How can I meet this experience with compassion?”

​

That distinction is one of the things I love about this system. You don't have to be perfect, spiritually advanced or have everything figured out before you explore Karuna Reiki. It is a practice of continuing to learn, grow and become more compassionate with yourself and the people around you.

Is Karuna Reiki® right for you?

Karuna Reiki is intended as an advanced Reiki practice rather than a starting point. If you already have a Reiki foundation and feel drawn to explore deeper aspects of Reiki, symbols, compassion and personal development, Karuna Reiki may be a natural next step. William Rand's teaching guidelines state that Karuna practitioner training follows an existing Reiki foundation and is not intended to replace Usui Reiki.
