Trust Your Intuition Without Needing a Reason

One of the hardest things you can do when learning to use your intuition is to trust it without needing a full understanding or a perfect reason to act. We end up believing we don't have enough data. So, we take no action.

Our society has convinced us that we must have a reason for everything - that it must be logical and explainable

But our intuition isn't always logical.

It's that quiet voice that guides us in the right direction even when it doesn't make sense. And so, the first thing that you must begin to master as you learn to use your intuition is to trust that you don't need a reason or any explanation to act on it.

I know this can be very difficult. Even after years of relying on my intuition, I still have moments when I feel like I must have a full story to go with it.

So, what do we do to allow ourselves to develop our intuition without needing a reason?

Here is the process I use to move forward with intuition when my brain wants to take over.

Take Time to Sit with the Intuitive Feeling

The first thing I do when I get an intuitive hit that doesn’t make sense is give myself time to be with the feeling. Not to analyze it, not to judge it, not to try and break it down, but sit with the piece of information that is being given. To become comfortable with the idea.

This alone can be very difficult because your mind will want to dive into all the logic behind it.

For example, one time I got an intuitive hit to cancel a massage I had scheduled. In my mind, there was zero reason, nothing on my schedule, and no pending plans I was waiting on. There was literally nothing going on.

I didn't want to dive in and cancel it because my brain was in rationalization mode and needed a reason mode. So, I sat with it for a few days. (I had the time before it needed to be cancelled.)

Every time I just sat with it, I found the experience hard. I was continually searching for an explanation.

During each session where I sat with it, I turned my focus to my body to keep my mind calm. I paid attention to feelings and sensations. With the goal of being comfortable with the idea.

Eventually, it got to the point where I was able to spend more time with it. At that point, I went to the next step.

Check in With Your Spirit Guides

After you are more comfortable with the idea, it is time to check in with your guides. You can ask questions like:

  • Is this accurate?

  • Is it human panic?

  • Is it critical to take action?

In this step, you are ensuring that the intuitive information is accurate rather than your subconscious 'human' side taking over.

Take Action

After I gather that information, then I act on my intuition.

In my example, I did cancel my appointment. And it turned out there was an unexpected snowstorm that day, which would have made it nearly impossible for me to get there. And knowing myself, it would have stressed me out and made me worry about cancellation fees! So, it was good that I cancelled it.

You don’t always have to take action. You might get to this point and decide not to act. And that's okay. Do what feels right for you. Just because you have an intuitive hit doesn't mean you need to follow through.

Once you have taken action, the following step is to evaluate how things turned out.

Assess Your Intuition

Part of the reason we want a clear reason and full details is that we are still getting used to trusting our intuition. In the beginning, we don’t always know what intuition is and what our mind is. Taking the time to review the accuracy of your intuition will help you let go of the need for logical answers.

For my intuition, this time it was spot on. But that hasn’t always been the case. When I was learning there were many, many, many times my brain took over (and sometimes still does). But as I tracked my intuition, I began to understand it better and now have fewer logical brain takeovers!

Do this assessment in the way that works best for you. You can use journaling, an intuition log, or a quick nightly check-in to see if you've tapped into your intuition, used it, and trusted it. How you do it is less important than doing it!

I have used a combination of an intuition log and journaling for mine. (Free intuition log below.)

Building a relationship with your intuition is exactly that — a relationship. It requires patience, active listening, and, most importantly, the grace to be wrong sometimes. As you stop demanding a "why" from your inner voice, you’ll find that it speaks more clearly and more often. Start small, keep track of your hits, and trust that the clarity you’re looking for will reveal itself in the result, even if it’s missing in the moment.
