What Happens Spiritually When You Never Slow Down?

man facing signs to slow down

Our lives are full. Between work, family, household responsibilities, and the constant stream of media notifications, it is hard to get quality downtime.

Many of us move from one task to the next without stopping, or if we do stop, we end up doing something that won’t fully renew us. Like scrolling on social media.

We often think about what this pace does to our bodies and minds - we talk about stress, burnout, and exhaustion. But we rarely ask what other areas might be impacted by being constantly on the go.

Let's explore what happens spiritually when we are overbooked.

What happens when we don’t slow down?

We lose connection to our source, ourselves and nature. It becomes harder to:

  • Hear your spirit guides.

  • Hear your higher self.

  • Stay grounded and connected to earth.

  • Be mindful of how you are living – goals/values/disconnect from self. We don’t notice when we get off track because we are simply too busy to catch the small shifts.

  • Catch emotional issues before they become a problem. Ultimately causing problems with ourselves and in our relationship with others.

  • Keep our energy strong. Instead, it becomes depleted, and we can no longer resource ourselves emotionally; we become more open to spiritual wounds, and we end up carrying others' energy.

And we don’t want that to happen, so let’s explore how you can tell if your pace of life is impacting you spiritually.

How to tell if you are losing connection:

  • You feel stuck in the same thought patterns, and nothing you are doing to stop them is working.

  • You can’t fall asleep – your guides are talking, you’re hashing through what happened during the day, you feel ungrounded. It is almost like your mind kicks into high gear the second you stop everything.

  • You feel stuck with the same problems. This can happen from a spiritual perspective because you aren’t learning the lesson that needs to be learned. Plus, you don’t have time to heal the cause, so they keep occurring.

  • You feel disconnected from yourself.

  • It is getting harder to be excited about things you usually love. It’s almost like everything is a grind.

  • You feel reactionary – like you are operating from behind and can’t gain control over any circumstances.

If any of these resonate with you, here are some ways that you can build more spiritual connection into your life.

How to Reconnect Spiritually

Start your bedtime routine 10 minutes earlier.

In this time, use silence to let your mind process what it needs to. You could sit outside in silence and get a bonus connection to nature. Or you could take a short walk, or even just dim the lights and sit in silence. What you do isn’t as important as it being quiet time – no phones, music, talking to someone or watching TV. Just silence.

Start a meditation practice at lunch

Starting a midday meditation practice can help you reconnect to yourself so you can better manage and deal with your day (and those in it!) Even 5 minutes will help you reconnect with yourself and find calm.

Spend more time in nature

This will help you connect with yourself and the earth. Giving you multiple benefits. And it doesn’t have to be going on hikes or to the beach. You can sit on your patio while talking to a friend or take your laptop outside. Yes, it is multitasking, which isn’t great for spiritual renewal, but if you are able to ground and get the benefits of seeing nature while working, it can help you. Just remember to get quiet time somewhere else in your day.

Practice present moment mindfulness

You can easily add this to your day, without making many changes. This, for the most part, will mean that you are no longer multitasking. You can still be doing things, but if you bring more consciousness to the moment, it will help you reconnect.

For example, when cooking dinner, only do that. No TV, no radio, no trying to work. Just cook. Or when at your child’s sporting event, only do that – don’t try to work while watching.

The goal is to be fully present in each moment of the day.

Make up your own!

We are all different in what helps us and what our schedule looks like. Get creative on adding moments to your day that will help you stay spiritually connected. In fact, play with a few approaches and see what works best for you.
